Your best online strategy is looking at the
most popular websites and base your layout and design from them. People
are creatures of habit, if one of your visitors does some shopping on
chapters.ca or amazon.ca, they are going to be used to a certain
workflow to buy online or get more information, make sure that the
workflow on your site matches.
There are sites that lose clients after
the visitor has already clicked on the buy button because the process
required too much time/ effort from the user. If you want more
marketing information on your clients ask after they have already
bought something from you and definitely don't make it a requirement
to buy.
Get your marketing information on "your" time not your customers
Using Google Analytics, which is free, you can nearly get all
the information that you need from your site visitors without them
required to so much as lift a finger. Don't make them work to buy from
you because they simply won't buy. With all of the competition for
online retailing, or e-tailing, if you make it difficult for your
visitors they will find what they are looking for on Ebay, Craigslist
or any number of the other massive online options.
